Helsinki Baltic herring market at Helsinki Market Square From 4 to 10 October 2026

The Baltic Herring Market has been a Helsinki tradition since 1743, standing as one of Finland’s oldest public events. This year, the event transforms into a complete archipelago experience—alongside the traditional stalls, a new maritime restaurant area will be introduced, and the product selection will expand beyond classic herring to include a wider variety of archipelago delicacies. Cozy wooden huts will also replace the old sales tents to enhance the market’s atmosphere.

Now, an even grander Baltic Herring Market warmly welcomes friends old and new!

Arrival:

Helsinki Baltic Herring Market takes place in a central location at Helsinki’s Market Square (Kauppatori). It’s easy to arrive without a car—please use public transport, or come on foot or by bike whenever possible. There are several city bike stations near the Market Square. Check timetables and any service changes in the HSL Journey Planner.

Accessibility:

The area is not fully accessible. The walkways within the event area are wide, but in some places uneven or sloping. At the Market Square, access close to the fishing boats is difficult by wheelchair due to stairs. Access to the sailing ships is not barrier-free. There are also construction sites in the area that may affect accessibility.

The nearest accessible parking space and drop-off point can be found on the Pohjois-Esplanadi side at the intersection with Helenankatu.

The needs of different language groups are taken into account in the event’s communications as comprehensively as possible. Event information is available on the website in Finnish, Swedish, and English.
