The Baltic Herring Market is renewing: A cozy restaurant yard will be built and the selection will expand
Helsinki’s most beloved autumn event, the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, is taking a leap this year toward an even more wholesome market atmosphere. The event is expanding into a comprehensive archipelago experience with the construction of a new maritime restaurant area, and the range of products will grow beyond traditional herring staples to include a wider variety of other archipelago delicacies.
The Baltic Herring Market will once again anchor in Helsinki this October. For the first time, the restaurant yard concept—familiar from Helsinki Christmas Market—will be introduced to Helsinki’s oldest public event. The Keisarinluoto pier, which previously served as a maintenance area, will be opened to the public as a restaurant and licensed alcohol area. An unobstructed sea view will allow visitors to admire the maritime Helsinki scenery while enjoying fresh archipelago treats.
Fishermen and traditional archipelago products remain the heart of the event, but the market is now actively seeking new operators. The goal is to find new sellers of fish and archipelago products to stand alongside the fishermen, as well as restaurants offering fish dishes to be enjoyed on-site.
“By no means do we want to give up on the fishermen. The fishing boats will remain in the Kolera-allas, and we are still looking for traditional sailing ships to participate. We are growing by seeking additional sellers of fish and archipelago products, restaurants, and licensed operators to work alongside them,” says Saara Vanhala, Senior Producer of the market.
The role of the Baltic herring at the market is evolving from a traditional spiced or canned product into a modern culinary experience. The event aims to highlight the versatility of herring and Baltic Sea fish while introducing market guests to a broad selection of archipelago delicacies from small producers.
