I was born in a small fishing village in Pyhä Suur-Koukkusaari. Everyone was a Baltic herring fisher. After the war, we caught only a little over a hundred kilograms of herring and sprat with our nets during the autumn. We heard from the outer islanders that the people of Suursaari attended the herring market. We decided to go as a group, too. And so we did – me included, as a kid barely in my teens. Several families set off from Koukkusaari. We had found a goldmine. A new hope was lit for life on the island: the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market. It was the 1950s. The herring market tradition has stayed with me even beyond my active working years!
